What to Expect at Your First Physiotherapy Appointment

Nervous about your first physio visit? Here's exactly what happens, what to wear and bring, and how to get the most out of your appointment.

What to Expect at Your First Physiotherapy Appointment

Booking your first physiotherapy appointment can feel like a small leap into the unknown. What actually happens? Will it hurt? Do you need to bring anything, and what on earth should you wear? If you have never seen a physio before, a little uncertainty is completely normal. The aim of this guide is simple: to take the mystery out of your first visit so you arrive relaxed and ready to make the most of it. Here is exactly what to expect at PhysMed in Unley.

Before you arrive: a few simple preparations

You do not need to do much to prepare, but a little thought helps the session run smoothly. First, wear comfortable clothing you can move in. If your problem is in your knee, shorts are ideal; for a shoulder, a singlet or loose top works well. The general rule is that we may need to see and assess the area, so dress in a way that makes that easy and comfortable for you. If you forget, do not worry — we can usually work around it.

Second, bring anything relevant. That might include a referral if you have one, details of any scans or X-rays, a list of medications, and your private health insurance card if you intend to claim. If you are coming through Medicare, DVA or NDIS, bring the relevant paperwork so we can sort out the funding side without fuss.

Third, have a think about your story. When did the problem start? What makes it better or worse? What have you already tried? Most importantly, what do you actually want to get back to — running, lifting your toddler, sleeping through the night, returning to sport? Knowing your goals helps us build a plan that means something to you.

The conversation: the most important part

Many people are surprised that a first physio appointment begins not with hands-on treatment but with a thorough conversation. This is deliberate and genuinely valuable. We will ask about your symptoms, your history, your daily life, your activity levels and your goals. It can feel like a lot of questions, but each one helps build an accurate picture, and the story you tell often points toward the diagnosis before we have laid a hand on you.

This is your chance to share everything that matters, including the worries you might feel are silly. There are no silly questions or irrelevant details here. If you are anxious that something is seriously wrong, say so. If you have a holiday, an event or a season you are desperate to be ready for, tell us. The more we understand about you, the better the plan we can build.

The physical assessment

After the conversation comes the hands-on part: the physical assessment. Depending on your situation, this might involve watching how you move, testing the range of movement in a joint, checking your strength, and feeling the area to understand what is going on. If you came in for a knee, do not be surprised if we also look at your hip, ankle or how you walk — the spot that hurts is not always the spot that needs the most attention, and assessing the whole movement system gives us a far more accurate picture.

The assessment should never be a painful ordeal. We may need to reproduce your symptoms briefly to understand them, but we work within your comfort and explain what we are doing as we go. If anything feels like too much, simply tell us, and we will adjust.

Getting answers and a plan

Once we have gathered the picture, we will explain what we think is going on in plain language, without jargon or alarm. Understanding your own problem is genuinely therapeutic — much of the fear around pain comes from not knowing what it is, and a clear explanation often brings real relief on its own.

From there, we build a plan together. This usually includes some combination of:

  • Hands-on treatment to ease symptoms and help you move more comfortably

  • A clear exercise plan, explained so you understand the why, not just the what

  • Practical advice on managing the problem day to day and between sessions

  • A realistic sense of timeframes and what progress should look like

  • An idea of how many sessions you might need, discussed honestly rather than open-endedly

You will often leave your very first appointment with something concrete to do, and a much clearer head about what lies ahead.

A note on expectations

It is worth setting one expectation gently: a single appointment rarely "fixes" a problem that has been building for weeks, months or years. Modern physiotherapy is largely about building capacity and resilience over time, and that takes a little consistency. What your first visit can do is give you an accurate diagnosis, a clear plan, some early relief and the confidence to start moving in the right direction. That is a genuinely strong foundation, and the active work between sessions is where much of the change happens.

How we work at PhysMed

Across our physiotherapy services, our approach is hands-on, evidence-based and built around your goals. We assess the whole movement system rather than chasing a single sore spot, and we aim to give you the understanding and the tools to manage your own body — so you rely less on passive treatment and on medication over time. For some clients, the tools at our recovery centre, including heat, cold and red light, can complement that plan by supporting recovery between sessions.

We also offer care across a range of funding options, including private health rebates you can claim on the spot, as well as DVA, Medicare with a valid referral, and NDIS. If you are unsure what applies to you, just ask when you book and we will make it simple.

There is genuinely nothing to be nervous about. A first physio appointment is a friendly conversation, a careful assessment, a clear explanation and a plan you can act on. If you are ready to get to the bottom of a niggle or finally tackle a long-standing problem, book an appointment or call us on 0466 337 497, and we will look after you from the moment you walk in.
